Every business has a growth model whether or not anyone has written it down — a causal chain from effort to revenue. Making that chain explicit is the first act of the playbook, because you cannot improve a machine you have never drawn.

Draw the Causal Chain

Start from revenue and work backward through the arithmetic that produces it. A hypothetical services firm might write: revenue equals proposals sent, times win rate, times average project size, plus repeat engagements from past clients. A subscription business writes a different chain: visitors, times trial rate, times conversion, times retention, plus expansion. Five to eight linked variables on one page is the goal — precise enough to be testable, short enough to be remembered.

Attach Real Numbers to Every Link

A model with blank values is a wish. Fill in last quarter’s actual figure for each variable, flagging any number you had to guess — those flags are your measurement gaps, and closing them is itself early playbook work. The moment numbers are attached, the model starts answering questions: which variable moved last quarter, and which one, if doubled, would change the business most?

Use the Model as the Team’s Shared Map

Once written, the model becomes the reference for every growth debate. Proposed projects must name the variable they intend to move. Disagreements become empirical — two people arguing about priorities are really arguing about which link is weakest, and the numbers can referee.

Action Step

Write your growth model as a single equation with real values from the last full quarter. Circle the variable you trust least and the variable with the most room to move.

Educational content only — not financial, legal, or individualized business advice, and no revenue outcome is promised. Every worked example is hypothetical; apply the frameworks to your own numbers and judgment.
