A North Star metric is the single measure that best captures the value your business delivers to customers — the number that, when it grows, means the business is genuinely healthier. This lesson defines the concept and clears up the most common misunderstandings around it.

Value Delivered Not Money Collected

Revenue is an outcome of value; a North Star measures the value itself. A hypothetical meal delivery service might choose weekly orders delivered on time, because that is the experience customers pay for — revenue follows it. Revenue as the North Star tells the team nothing about how to grow it; a value measure points at the behavior causing growth.

The Tests of a Good North Star

A strong candidate passes four tests: it reflects value customers actually receive, it leads revenue rather than lagging it, every function can influence it, and it is measurable at least weekly. A gym might weigh member visits per week against total memberships sold — visits pass the value test; sold memberships include people who never attend and quietly cancel.

What a North Star Is Not

It is not the only number you watch — guardrails like margin, cash, and quality still get monitored. It is not permanent — revisit it as strategy shifts. And it is not a target to hit by any means available; it is an orientation device keeping daily decisions pointed at customer value.

Action Step

Write three candidate North Star metrics for your business and score each against the four tests. Pick the winner, write one sentence explaining why its growth would prove customers are getting more value, and share it with anyone who works with you.
