The toolkit’s model template separates inputs, calculations, and outputs into distinct tabs. This structure is the difference between a model that can be updated monthly and one that is rebuilt every quarter.
Inputs tab holds every assumption
Prices, volumes, rates, hire dates, payment terms. Each with a label, a unit, and a source. Nothing typed into a formula anywhere else.
Engine tabs do the arithmetic
Revenue, costs, headcount, working capital, and the three statements are calculated from inputs. Formulas only, no constants, so that one input change flows everywhere.
Output tab is what readers see
A one-page summary and the charts a lender or partner would want. If a reader needs to open the engine tabs to understand the business, the output tab needs work.
Action Step
Open the model template and confirm every tab is labeled as inputs, engine, or outputs; move any typed constants you find to the inputs tab.
